Context and Purpose: Sports tourism, as a subset of the tourism industry, can also contribute to the achievement of sustainable development. To date, various studies have been conducted in this field, which require review and analysis. The primary objective of the present study is to conduct a comparative analysis of sustainable sports tourism development patterns and models worldwide, while also proposing recommendations and guidelines for Iran.
Methodology: The present study is applied in nature and employs Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as its research method, utilizing library-based studies for data and information collection. The main approach of this research is case-oriented, and in terms of reasoning, it adopts a deductive approach.
Findings: The findings of this study indicate that successful sustainable sports tourism development models worldwide are built upon five key dimensions: economic, environmental, socio-cultural, institutional, and managerial. The results demonstrate that no successful model has achieved sustainable development solely by emphasizing a single dimension; rather, what has proven to be the key to success is a balanced combination tailored to the local conditions of each country.
Conclusion: In this path, drawing upon successful global models—not through mere imitation, but through intelligent adaptation to the cultural, social, and economic conditions of Iran—can serve as a reliable shortcut for achieving sustainable sports tourism development. The findings of the comparative analysis of successful sustainable sports tourism development models worldwide indicate that the success of these models stems from an integrated and simultaneous perspective on the multiple dimensions of sustainability.
